چکیده

Generalized speedup is deened as parallel speed over sequential speed. In this paper the generalized speedup and its relation with other existing performance metrics, such as traditional speedup, eeciency, scalability, etc., are carefully studied. In terms of the introduced asymptotic speed, we show that the diierence between the generalized speedup and the traditional speedup lies in the deenition of the eeciency of unipro-cessor processing, which is a very important issue in shared virtual memory machines. A scientiic application has been implemented on a KSR-1 parallel computer. Experimental and theoretical results show that the generalized speedup is distinct from the traditional speedup and provides a more reasonable measurement. In the study of diier-ent speedups, an interesting relation between xed-time and memory-bounded speedup is revealed. Various causes of superlinear speedup are also presented.

Code Sharing among Virtual Machines

Sharing of code among applications executing in separate virtual machines can lead to memory footprint reductions and to performance improvements. The design of a general and acceptable sharing mechanism is challenging because of several constraints: performance considerations, the possibility of dynamic class loading, dependencies between shared code and the runtime system, and the potential o...

Implementing Transparent Shared Memory on Clusters Using Virtual Machines

Shared memory systems, such as SMP and ccNUMA topologies, simplify programming and administration. On the other hand, clusters of individual workstations are commonly used due to cost and scalability considerations. We have developed a virtual-machine-based solution, dubbed vNUMA, that seeks to provide a NUMA-like environment on a commodity cluster, with a single operating system instance and t...

Semiotics of Collective Memory of the Iran-Iraq War (Holy Defence): A Case Study of the Shared Images in Virtual Social Networks

This study aims to achieve a semiotic understanding of collective memory of the Iran-Iraq war. For this purpose, samples of images in virtual social networks shared in response to the news of discovery and return of the bodies of more than 175 divers have been analyzed. Visual signs in photographs, cartoons, graphic designs, prints, paintings and posters, in methods of historical pictures and f...

Virtual Shared Memory and Distributed Memory Implementations of Parallel Algorithms for Numerical Integration

Parallel globally adaptive algorithms for numerical integration provide a simple example of algorithms that exploit control parallelism. In this paper we consider the implementation of such algorithms on both virtual shared memory (KSR-1) and distributed memory (iPSC/860) machines and investigate how the characteristics of the diierent architectures aaect the choice of implementation and thereb...

Parallel Virtual Memory for Time Shared Environments

This paper analyses the issues involved in providing virtual distributed shared memory for time-shared parallel machines. We study the performance of two di erent page management policies, namely, static and dynamic page allocation under two widely accepted scheduling policies: Gang scheduling and independent processor scheduling. The performance of each page management policy is studied under ...
